It’s hard to believe that this semester has already come to an end, and so has my internship here at Burkhart Marketing. Working as the digital marketing intern these last four months has taught me so much.
I was very excited to apply for the role and even more excited when I landed the position to get my first real-world experience in marketing. I am sad that my time has come to an end, but I have taken away some valuable lessons that will last a lifetime.
My Internship Experience
My internship here at Burkhart has offered me the opportunities to not only look at the creative side of marketing but also the analytical side. I have had the opportunity to write blogs, create social posts and images and track social media and website data.
Writing blogs was something I had never done before. At first, I wasn’t too sure how that was going to go. I was decent at writing papers, but I had never written something that wasn’t assigned to me by a teacher or professor. I’m not going to lie, sometimes it was hard. I had a lot of freedom when writing blogs; I got to come up with a topic and decide what to include in each one I wrote. That challenged me to be creative and original. Some days, I felt like I had run out of ideas but pushed myself to keep creating quality blogs.
I had some experience working with Canva before starting my internship but not a whole lot. During my time, I got very familiar with the system and even created some of my own templates to work with. This semester I worked with another intern, and we were tasked with coming up with the social media content calendars for different months. This gave me the whole experience from the planning phase to seeing the end result.
Before starting at Burkhart, I was convinced that I was more on the creative side of marketing and wanted nothing to do with analytics. After tracking the social media data and website data for a couple of months, I have a new appreciation for analytics. Getting the experience of tracking social media data and website data allowed me to see the content followers and viewers engaged with the most. This enabled me to see what content worked best and where they are spending the most time so that those areas could be improved if needed.
Important Lessons
Even though my internship at Burkhart was only a semester long, I felt like a part of the team. Everyone at Burkhart was so welcoming and supportive. If I ever had any questions about anything, I knew I could just reach out and get the help I needed.
This was a remote role, so I never got to actually work in the office with everyone, but that didn’t change the experience for me. I still got to know the team members and got just as much experience as I would have with working in the office. In a way, I feel it gave me more of an advantage for future roles that could be remote and helped me with my time management skills.
Though it felt short, I have loved my time here at Burkhart Marketing and have gained so much knowledge and new skills to last the rest of my career. I got to put everything I have learned so far as a marketing student at The University of Indianapolis to test and add to that knowledge.
I will be forever grateful to the Burkhart Marketing crew for everything they have helped me learn the past couple of months and for giving me this opportunity.
