A well-designed portfolio is every designer’s key to finding a job. It’s the one thing that helps them express themselves to potential employers. How do you know if your portfolio is good enough? How do you know if it will capture their attention and truly show future employers who you are as a designer? Keep reading and hopefully, we can help you try and figure that out! Here are our tips for what to include in a good design portfolio.
Fit Your Portfolio To The Job
When putting together your work, you want to make sure your work supports the position you are applying for. Make it very clear that you know how to do the work necessary for the position. There should be no question that you know what you’re doing.
This is the time when you need to sell yourself to these people. Give them what they want! But also, don’t be afraid to sprinkle some of your other talents in your portfolio as well. Just keep them close to the same realm of the job position, and keep them to a minimum. The main focus should be the work related to the job.
Give Your Portfolio Context and Results
Some of the best work to have in your design portfolio is case studies. Case studies are great! They show the reviewer that you can work through a problem to find a solution. Case studies usually have a lot to them, so do not skip out on giving the reviewer context! Providing context with your work is super important. Someone cannot accurately evaluate something without knowing the context behind it.
Not only should you provide context with all your work, but you should also be able to provide results. Having results to backup all of your work shows you can follow through with your solutions. It shows the reviewer that you aren’t all talk and that you can make an impact with your work.
Show Passion
Your portfolio is a representation of yourself. Don’t be afraid to show your passion for what you’re doing. Pay attention to detail and treat your portfolio as your little design baby. If someone opens it up and can immediately tell the amount of work you put into it, then you’ve made a real impact, my friend. Showing that you’re passionate about what you do can sometimes create a bigger impact than the portfolio itself. Work on your portfolio with a lot of thought and care and you’ll get that job in no time!
