Hey, its Jacob- the creative intern for the summer!
As you probably read in my spotlight blog post, I am a strategic communications major at Butler and headed into my senior year. For those that don’t know, strategic communications is a combo major at Butler, combining PR and advertising into a single major. Switching to this major from marketing was a little different, but something I’m so glad that I did. It has taught me a lot, and if you keep reading I’ll tell you why.
Adobe Creative Suite knowledge
Adobe Suite is such a huge part of marketing and advertising now, and thankfully this major has given me ample experience using the different programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign mainly) through projects and keynote speakers that have come to my classes. This experience has helped with creating and editing graphics in my time at Burkhart, as well as previous internships. Being proficient in these has allowed me to stay focused on my work instead of google tutorials throughout the day.
Perhaps my favorite thing about this major is the flexibility it provides. Since it is a combo of advertising, PR and even a little bit of marketing, it has shown me the many different paths I could follow. This has shown to be true by the different types of work I have done, from my time at Butler Athletics to Burkhart. Being able to transition between social media management, creating graphics and even writing blog posts can all be attributed to the flexibility of the major.
One of the more specific things was crisis communication and how to handle it. Learning how to effectively manage and communicate in a crisis situation can be very valuable to companies. I was taught how to handle any crisis in a set of steps to ensure each measure is properly taken to reduce and recover from the crisis. Thankfully I haven’t had to use this yet as no crises have hit where I’ve worked.
Writing for the medium
This is more of the PR side of the major, but nonetheless still important. Knowing how to write for all types of situations and areas of the business is a very important characteristic. Different parts of the business require different writing types and knowing which one is which is something I am thankful to have learned.
Love what you do
StratComm has shown me I can love what I do, each and every day. It shows you how much of an impact you have with your work and the difference you can make. Getting to make graphics and social content is something I love to do, and Burkhart has done nothing but increase the passion I have for it.
