Intern Spotlight: Keely Dempsey

Closing out our summer intern intros is Keely Dempsey, our Digital Intern! Keely will be a senior at Butler University in the fall and is a double major of Strategic Communication and Psychology. Read on to learn more about her love of animals and working with nonprofits.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

I would spend more time with my pets. I’m an animal lover through and through and I’m always working on some project for my pets. Right now I’m building my hamster a maze, for scientific reasons of course.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Not that it’s surprising given my pet-enthusiasm, but I wanted to be a vet or a zoo-keeper. However, after working at an animal shelter for all of middle and high school, I realized I get far too emotionally attached and would want to adopt all my patients. But I can still channel this passion into my work in marketing by helping the many non-profits that exist in this field.

What drew you to/kept you in advertising? (How did you choose it?)

I enjoy making communication more effective and bringing people together for a common goal. Advertising for me is a great way to accomplish this! Plus, I’ve seen first hand from my work with nonprofits such as the previously mentioned animal shelter just how important advertising can be for a cause.

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?

Ellen DeGeneres: Imagine meeting all those celebrities! Also all the work she does for helping others look very fulfilling.

Who or what inspires you?

So many individuals have inspired me, but if I had to choose one person I would say my English teacher during my freshman year of high school. He helped me see how influential writing and speaking can be and how such a skill can help people.

What is your most-used emoji?

🙃. It perfectly encompasses the stress of a college student.

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?

If I’m being honest, probably what my next meal will be.

What is a professional goal that you hope to accomplish in the next five years?

After graduating and earning my two undergraduates in Strat Comm and Psych I want to work in the field and get world experience before then going back and earning my masters.

What’s your favorite throwback jam?

Now that the Jonas Brothers are back together I’m going back and listening to some of their bops such as Burnin’ Up.

Who is your favorite superhero? Least favorite?

My favorite superhero would probably be Blade from the Marvel Comics Universe. He doesn’t get the appreciation he deserves for being a vampire-fighting vampire. I’m not sure I have a least favorite hero. I just know I prefer a less cliche back story than say…Superman.

What’s your favorite 90’s show?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I’m obsessed!

What are you reading currently? What is your favorite book?

Right now I’m reading about the personality disorder of narcism in Shahida Arabi “Becoming the Narcissist’s Nightmare”. Not exactly the happiest read but definitely one I recommend for other people passionate about psychology or who just want to be able to deal with such situations.

Where is your happy place?

Anywhere close to my pets. Sitting and watching my aquariums is very relaxing.
