5 Ways to Connect with Your Coworkers

The workflow in the office is essential to a company’s vitality. However, there is no workflow if employees do not connect. Below we’ve provided five tips that will give you more confidence to start a conversation and start to connect with your coworkers.

Communication

The old saying “communication is key” still holds true to this day. Whether it’s about a work-related project or genuinely showing interest in your coworker’s lives, it’s crucial to stop and remember that a workplace flows better when everyone is working cohesively. Communicating with your coworkers can create a sense of comradery and inspire each other to want to work better together.

Stop Complaining

Negative energy can be absorbed by whoever is around you. When you put those negative words out into the universe, it can cause others to feel down. Complaining about work continuously is not only irritating but can weigh others down. Everyone has good and bad days, but there are other ways to handle the stress from work other than spewing negative words. You all are working for the same company, so when you complain about it, it may cause hostile relationships.

Talk about life in the office

As long as you are not complaining constantly, there is no harm in talking about work. Talking about how you accomplish a task, what you eat for lunch or other typical office routines are great ways to start to relate to your coworkers. It’s also a great way to start a conversation, being that you both are working for the same company and probably share very similar day-to-day experiences.

Bring up what’s relevant

Whether it be the news, pop culture or even a new show that’s come out, it’s easy to talk about current events. Finding out what type of content your coworkers are interested in, such as which shows they watch, can tell you a lot about a person. By finding out what kind of content they spend their free time on can gauge the rest of your interactions and start to make them more personalized.

Be Authentic

While you can treat each interaction differently depending on who you are speaking with, do not alter yourself. Being authentic is a characteristic many people appreciate. Not everyone is going to mesh well together, but at least if you are yourself, they can respect that. It’s usually easy to point out a people pleaser.
